We are back for another recap of the recently concluded Coding Boot Camp 2022. In this video, we will be joined by Heimo Jeske to guide us through the process of exporting data to Microsoft Excel from Delphi. Similar to the previous videos, this session is also based on Kevin Bond’s How to Program Effectively in Delphi for AS/A Level Computer Science book. After learning about databases from the previous sessions and how they play an integral part not just in Windows program development but also in other platforms (Linux, macOS, to name a few), this time we will learn how to export data from Delphi. To be more specific, exporting data to Excel from Delphi with zero budget.

How to Export Data to Microsoft Excel from Delphi?

There are various ways to export data from Delphi but the most efficient way is to use the objects, methods, and properties from the server. For this video, Heimo will introduce us to the “Computer Object Model” or COM. Generally, COM is a binary interface standard for a software component that was introduced by Microsoft in 1993. It is used to enable inter-process communication object creation in a large range of programming languages like Delphi. It also provides a stable ABI or Application Binary Interface that doesn’t change between compiler releases. This means that each and every compiler is being upgraded without changing the interfacing part, which also makes it very powerful and very attractive for object-oriented languages like C++ and Delphi library.

Interestingly, Delphi can build software using com-aware components. These components are identifiable by class IDs (CLSIDs). In this video, the presenter will walk us through the process of importing a CSV file into a String Grid and exporting this data to an Excel Spread Sheet. We will also learn how to format this Excel Spreadsheet and define an Excel graph through Delphi based on provided data. Heimo will provide a series of samples and demonstrations to show us how the process works. To learn more about exporting data to Excel from Delphi, feel free to watch the video below.
