Idea Validation With Reddit

2/28/2022

Before starting any random project it’s best to do a little product research and perhaps flush out the idea before writing code or spending too much time on it. I’m not short on ideas and I’m pretty familiar with Reddit, It’s where I first came across Gummy Search. Their tagline is to mine the data that is Reddit and help you find and validate ideas. I have ideas and I have used Reddit so I thought I’d give it a go.

Overall it’s a really good product, it does what is says it does and it does it well. You start by selecting an audience. aka the people you are interested in listening to and would be receptive to your idea. I had a few ideas so I made a few audiences.

Its quite obvious the size of the audience you have selected. It’s also a bit up to you to be able to find the right subreddits. Yes Gummy Search helps but Reddit may not have the users targetable the way you want. For example users that might like my Tally app are all over Reddit and not nicely grouped into a bucket. Some ideas will be more suited to Reddit research than others.

Once you have an Audience this is where I found Gummy shines. It has two parts. One a series of suggestions and a keyword search. I found both super helpful and useful.

The suggestions were all very well put together I found all of them useful.

Keywords is were the power is, if your idea can be searched by keywords and I’ll assume most can be.

If you have a keyword you can also track and monitor it. Obviously great for monitoring activity and the competition,

Clicking a keyword or suggestion will show all the related Reddit posts & comments with appropriate sorting and filtering. The UI here has been well thought out and well implemented. Kudos to the UX team.

The in app link will takes you directly to the Reddit post.

Also there is a dashboard of things you are tracking.

Hopefully this review will let you know if Gummy Search is for you. I think it’s well done and well priced. I found it useful and valuable. A few minutes using Gummy Search is a much better use of time than trying to use the Reddit search or building something and then hoping for customers.

Try Gummy Search for yourself and ley me know what you think.
